A critical security issue with the Intel Management Engine has been reported at the beginning of this month by Intel. This issue affects Neptun laptops that use an Intel CPU that supports vPro.

Here is a very good article about the issue (German only): https://www.heise.de/ct/artikel/Tipps-z ... 04454.html

Intel set up a site for this issue (with instructions/downloads for detection to identify affected computers and mitigation if a patch is not yet available for your model): https://security-center.intel.com/advis ... geid=en-fr

Download and run Intel’s detection tool to check if your laptop is affected: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26755

The security issue is only exploitable if the remote management component (Intel AMT) has been set up for use (status "provisioned"). The affected Neptun laptops have been shipped with Intel AMT installed but not set up (status "not provisioned"). Therefore, they cannot readily be attacked using the discovered security issue unless the user set up the Remote Management in Intel AMT himself. We still strongly recommend that all affected systems be patched as soon as a patch is available!

For lists of potentially affected models and links to updates to fix the vulnerability, please refer to the manufacturer’s pages below.

(Microsoft Surface: not affected)

Please also make sure to install the latest System BIOS for your laptop. Updates can be found on the manufacturers support website.
