Hallo.

I bought an Elitebook G2 1.5 month ago from Neptun. 3 days ago after it suddenly crashed. After that, each time I logged into the PC, the screen blinked and did not let me do anything but for TaskManager-->Log off. I ended up doing Windows' "refresh", which finally stopped the blinking.
I have read Refresh would leave my data (such as My Documents files) intact, and all programs that are erased should be in a folder on the desktop. However, I don't find any data in "Windows.old" folder (only "Public" folder is there), and nothing is on my desktop. Maybe all data are gone....? Also, originally there were many apps and some third party programs when I bought the PC, but seems like they are gone. I don't know what I exactly had.

My questions are;
1) Where could I possibly find my data?
2) There is a "Recovery Image" drive from the beginning (I didn't create it), and still using 11GB. It has folders "Point_A" through "Point_D" and other files. Could it help recover my data? If so, how could I use it?
3) Would the recovery DVD that came with the PC be of any help?
4) What could I do to prevent such crash and data loss next time?

Hi,

This sounds like a complicated case. As I understand you there is no backup of your data? What OS do you have installed?

I'm a bit confused that you have an Windows.old folder. This is normally created when you install a newer Version of Windows without getting rid of the old installation. Normally the refresh option in windows should leave your files untouched (only programms and Windows settings should be lost).

With the laptop you should have received a DVD with HP Applications & Drivers (the OS Recovery DVD can be ordered for free from HP -> see the top post in the HP forum: http://forum.projektneptun.ch/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=7368).

The A&D Recovery DVD is used after Windows was installed (with the OS recovery DVD) to install the HP applications and activate the hardware components. 1) If you can not find the data on your harddrive it might be lost.
2) The recovery partition is used to refresh/reset your laptop. No personal data is stored there.
3) The recovery partition is more or less the same thing you can do with the OS Recovery DVD. The A&D recovery DVD I described above.
4) The simple answer to this is: Backup your data, regularly. Even if the issue was caused by a broken harddrive the warranty explicitly doesn't cover any data loss. After refreshing the OS it is difficult to determine what caused the crash.
