I just bought in winter 2012 a HP 8460p. After running only Linux on my laptops for some years, I decided to have again a dual boot machine. Unfortunately HP has created already 4 primary partitions, Boot, Windows, HP_RECOVERY and HP_TOOLS. Since you need at least one primary partition to create an extended partition, I just decided to get rid of the HP_RECOVERY and HP_TOOLS.
In case I want to go back to the original state, I created an image of the original installation using Achronis.
I then reduced the size of the Windows partition using gparted and created an extended partition. Within this partition I created three logical partition for Ubuntu, a swap, root and a home partition. Then I installed Ubuntu and had my dual boot system.
Maybe this information helps somebody else as well.
